In
late June 2007, Mark, Janice, Sarah and Rachel flew to Boston and, loaded down
with a week's worth of supplies, our two families drove to Acadia National Park,
located on Mt. Desert Island on the mid-coast of Maine. On the way we stopped at
Portland, to pick up Mom and Ben, who flew with her from Cleveland.
Our
week together was as magical as any week in Acadia always is. We had managed to
find a spacious former bed and breakfast inn for rent, big enough to hold all 10
of us, in Seal Cove on the "quiet side" (far western side) of the island,
distant from the bustle of Bar Harbor. Mark and I were in charge of cooking, the
women planned the outings. The food was great and plentiful, of course, the
outdoor adventures spectacular. We had for years longed to share this gorgeous
place with Mark and Janice. Our days were filled with hikes (some quite
challenging, taking members of our group up and over 2 or 3 mountains in a row);
bike rides; scenic drives; and, a favorite activity of Sam and Nick's,
clambering around the rocky Atlantic shores watching and feeling the thunderous
roar of the pounding waves. On our last day we had a traditional New England
steamed lobster dinner, a first for Mark and his family; unfortunately the house
didn't have any lobster shell cracking tools (nutcrackers) so we used hammers,
and made a huge mess. Nick's birthday was during the vacation, and we filled the
backyard that night with sparklers and light and smoke. Mom was so glad to be
with the whole gang, and our time together was enriched by our shared memories
of Dad, who had wanted so much be part of this adventure.
