In late July 2006 we joined about 200
other members of the Baumann family (as it was originally spelled) for a family
reunion, a gathering which has been
held
every 4 years since the early 1900s. Hosted at one of the original farm
properties in Henrietta, Ohio, where members of the family settled, we gathered
under a big tent for food, fun, and lots of visiting and catching up. Each
member was identified (by the color of the ribbon on their name tag) as
belonging to the John/Katherine clan (my great grandparents), the Niklaus/Elizabeth
family, or the Christian/Magdalene branch.
My immediate family was there, of course,
as my parents live just a few miles down the road on the outskirts of Lorain. It was
great to be with them and my brother Mark and his wife Janice,
and their now grown children, Ben, Sarah and Rachel. Mark and the kids
even joined us at our hotel on one particularly hot afternoon for a swim in the
hotel pool.
Unfortunately, only one family among my
many first cousins came, meaning the John/Katherine branch of the family wasn't
fully represented.
